Introduction
Everything
around you has one thing in common, like a book or even your pet. That one thing is that everything, except energy (light, heat), is made of matter. What is matter made up of then? Matter is actually
made up of tiny particles called atoms. What is an atom? For centuries, people
thought particles can’t get smaller than an atom. Are there particles smaller
than that? This website will tell you more about atoms and what is inside of them.
I created this website for my Grade 6 Genius Hour Project. Particles has always been one of my topics of interest. I am curious about it and so I wanted to find out more about them and their components, which are electrons, protons, and neutrons. Recently, I learned that something even smaller exist inside the atom which is called quarks. These tiny particles are the smallest ones ever found!
For this project, I designed and built a model of the helium atom, with a nucleus in the center and electrons orbiting around it. The model can give people a clear idea of what an atom is composed of. I also built a model of quarks inside protons and neutrons. Through building these models, I gained a better understanding of the structure of an atom.
